Intent
At Seer Green CE School, we believe that learning a language enriches the curriculum. It provides excitement, enjoyment and challenge for children and teachers, helping to create enthusiastic learners and to develop positive attitudes to language learning throughout life.
The acquiring of skills, knowledge and understanding of spoken and written language contribute to the development of children’s oracy and literacy, and to their understanding of their own culture and those of others; in turn, sparking curiosity about the world around them. Language also lies at the heart of ideas about individual identity and community. Learning to speak another language, with increasing confidence, can do a great deal to shape a child’s ideas, build their own sense of identity and enable collaboration and communication with others, both at Seer Green and as they move beyond into the wider world.
Implementation
We use Twinkl scheme of work, which allows for significant progress in the critical areas of language learning, including speaking, listening, reading and writing skills within varied and relevant contexts.
In order to engage the learners and pique curiosity about the world around them, Latin is embedded into the Year 4 curriculum, through the history and geography topics taught at this time, to demonstrate the relevance of language and its associated skills, whilst also enriching every child’s subject knowledge, allowing them to thrive and feel confident in their ability to take on the challenges of understanding and using a foreign language to express themselves.
Impact
Our school curriculum is influenced by our school vision, aiming to provide relevant knowledge which will see every child engaging with and valuing languages, whilst also flourishing as an individual, confident in expressing themselves, as well feeling prepared, curious and excited about the world beyond.
